Heading off to Dumfries and Galloway in August and just bought a new beach caster. Can any of you guys suggest a multiplier around the £70 - £90 range? Looking at the ones in Bobco tackle and they all seem to be for boat use (maybe you can use them for beach casting too and I'm just not realising)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mate, There are loads of different kinds of multiplier out there, and may be worth looking online for a second hand one. If you have good thumb control and don't need a multi with all that magnetic brake jazz, I'd recomend going for something like what I use; Mitchell Garcia 600's Absolute bare minimum in terms of brakes & gears etc, but incredible multis. Can chuck out miles, and you can use them for beach or boat. They stopped making them in the late 70's, (another proof of how solid they are) but you can pick them up for £30 on Ebay every now & then. Pure powerhouses!

might be an idea to ask the same question on one of the dedicated sea angling sites such as holderness-coast-fishing.co.uk - guys on there really know their stuff .

Diawa Slosh 20 or an old pre 80's abu 6500, if you are fishing clean beaches, or a slosh30 or ABU 7000 if its a bit mixed. If you are starting to fish serios rough ground, the reels will need to be suitable, possible one of the penns [525?] i use abu 8-9000c's or abu 12's ,but again pre 80's models ,the new ones are [carp] Or, does it need to be a muliplier, there are some very good fixed spool reels made now, penns especially. Not convinced the Diawas have the longevity. To be honest , having a look at what is been used around you on the ground ,is a pretty good way of determining whats suitable for where you are

I agree with the the fixed spools for beach-casting, not great for rotten bottom fishing, but you can get a serious cast on them! I know there is quite a lot of rough ground on the Galloway coastline, but also some humongous beaches. So maybe worth going for worse case scenario and getting a multi.

"morleyblanker" - PM me if you might be interested in a SLOSH 30. For reasons which I won't bore you with, I have one up for sale currently. Any reasonable offer, given its lack of use and good condition, will be considered. Hell, we live in the digital age ... here's a photo ...
