Been a while since i went (6 years) but the place to catch then was Rodgers Island. Very deep but we were literally catching 4' in front of us 25' deep, loads and loads of hybrid. Fished it 2 days on nearly made 100lb both days but not quite... Other places we fished, pump house/ weir were very hard and we struggled on the shannon anywhere else.. We did drive around one day and found another small river and fished it jsut below a bridge. Didnt have a clue about it, what it was called or anything, started slow but picked up and some decent fish were caught. We were also told of a lake that supposedly had a good head of tench and bream but when we went to checki it out access was impossible.. Maybe manage to get 2 in but there was 4 of us and reed 6' out the bank and it didnt look liek anyoen had been there in a long time.. We stayed on an farm and walk to pub was a good 1.5k but the entertainment was some of the most memorable i have had in Ireland.. Miss it alot... Oh Guinness was ok as well

Anywhere on the lower Shannon is good sport, the warm water outflow around Shannon Bridge is well worth a visit

We have rented a little holiday cottage in Ballycrossaun about 4 miles from the centre of Portumna...worked out at nearly £150 cheaper than in the centre....Only myself and old man going as the 3rd person dropped out...annoying as its the same price for 2 as for 3. Last time went to Ireland was 5 years ago and we were up on Lough Muckno and round there and had a cracking time so just wanted somewhere different but not much info on the net about access for Lough Derg

Years ago we stayed at Portumna and fished the shannon and lough Derg every day. We used to the be able to get the van down by the river but the council repsonsible for the country park stopped us. We always had boat hire which got us around the lake , loads of places. to fish. The boat owner /hirer was great. We used to take sacks of crumb with us and mix it for pre baiting. If the fish are still there and biting trust me you will need a boat load !! dont know cost of casters or maggots now but we stopped going when the carp explosion happened in the uk in the late 90's mid 2000. The casters were then about 22 quid per gallon and maggots werent far behind. If you do go take as much bait as you can , if you going for the lake bream then pic a spot about 40yards out. sink a plastic milk bottle marker and fill in in every evening with as much as you can. fish eevry day and even if it blows the better it will be. OH and take lots and lots of money.. you will need it . Ireland is on its and very expensive. Back then it was about 1 pound to a irish punt. Guiness was 2.40 per pint. good luck Barnsleyandy
