Was talking to a mate on Yeadon Tarn last week, the only thing he'd caught so far was a crayfish about 6" long it was laid on the bank with him

Loads in the Wharfe but make sure you have the correct paperwork before collecting them. The EA dont have enough manpower or time to enforce the theft of fish, and check licenses etc.. I'm not telling any one to do it, but I wouldn't be bothered about being caught. Thats just my opinion. If you take them to sell, be carefull you don't poison anyone though! I'm from essex ( Shuttupppp ) and i used to get them from the lea and stort. My old man would b-b-q them.

Also, if you do happen to catch on (by accident) stick it in a bucket of fresh tap water for 24hrs. Change the water a few times & it should taste better.
I know of a lad that catches them from the upper reaches of the Wharfe, he went last weekend and in less than 20 minutes he had 20 in his bucket, all ready for cooking.

what i did was ( this was before my dad took em ) was to chuck a metal trap in to the water by my feet, so it would draw all the crayfish out the swim, and over to where my trap was. Then when i went home, let them go. could have used a punctured can of dog/cat food on a bit of rope.
Get a trap, they ae cheap, or make something. Stick something manky and smelly in it, and drop it at your feet. ALL the cray in the area will be drawn to it, then at the end of the day do what you want with them. If its nice, get a chuck away bbq and eat them on the bank.....

I applied for licence to take crayfish from the Ure. They gave me the runaround for almost a year then I got some total numbskull from the EA telling me that catching Signal crayfish (the invasive alien ones) actually increases their poulation !!! He reckoned that the adults were cannibals and ate the young. How do these idiots actually get jobs? Try do it 'by the book' and get a licence, like we all do for rods (I hope,,,) and you'll get shafted by the Environment Analcy !

Signal crayfish are not protected.
If you do catch a signal crayfish, kill it, dont put it back.
It's the whiteclaw crayfish (Native) that are protected.

Having come across Crayfish on the Menu at a Pub in Wensleydale this weekend and never having tasted them I thought why not . They were delicious , and I must admit to feeling a little smug in finishing them off remembering all the times the little beggers had robbed me of my hook and bait over the recent years , revenge .
