Our Market Research Team have asked us to ask people who contact us this month to fill out a short (anonymous) customer satisfaction form. It's online here: Environment Agency QuestionaireIf you've taken part in this webchat and can take five minutes to fill this out, we'd really appreciate it. We won't see the forms you complete though, so please feedback directly to us too. Thanks, Jerome.

Jerome: The survey. The link doesn't open in usual way, only by highlighting it all with left click of mouse depressed, then right click to open the link. Once opened, the questions seem inappropriate to this forum exercise, so I've given up! I've left my "Well done" comment in a post elsewhere in your forum.

Link only seems to work if you copy and paste it in to your browser web.questback.com/isa/qbv.dll/SQ?q=8w6qmtrn2Ai6xAVyJJhVWzZTRr0nYM9uHFyD9JNgXImK8w%3D%3DI'll keep trying to find away but adding a url link to it stuffes it up Cracked it i think.. try link below : Environment Agency QuestionnaireI would like to say thanks to the Environment Agency Yorkshire Team for taking the time to undertake the sessions. There is obviously alot more that goes on than them just logging on for a couple of hours dodging questions and i do believe that the questions put to them have been answered openly and honestly. ;D ;D ;D

Hi, thanks for the positive feedback.
I wasn't able to look through the questionnaire without actually filling one in. Sorry for the dodgy link! If the questions aren't appropriate for what we've done on this forum, then don't worry about filling it in. We'd still like to know what you think though, so just let us know directly.
Thanks,
Jerome.

And i still didn't get a sensible answer as to why they issue licences for people to net an endangered species(the eel) waste of bloody time.

Hello Tommy1, Sorry your question didn't get answered during the session. This is just down to a bit of confusion and not because we were avoiding it. I think your question is in a different thread somewhere (?), which is why it was missed. Although this Q&A is now closed, if you repost your question in this thread (so I can find it) I'll set about getting you an answer. I won't be able to answer new questions here though, with the exception of this one (and the question about disabled access that was posted a few minutes before the end of the session). We're happy to do another of these sessions in the future, so if you have any new questions either save them up for then, come to one of our evening meetings (details will be in the newsletters) , or feel free to contact us directly using the contact details on our website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/contactus/default.aspx Jerome.

Hello, I’ve contacted Martin James and Miran Aprahamian, two of our top people working on eel conservation issues. They say: The European eel is a single European stock and conservation efforts are being coordinated across Europe. The UK must comply with European Council Regulation 1100/2007 which establishes ‘measures for the recovery of the stock of the European eel’. The UK eel fishery makes up around 1% of total European catches and is heavily regulated. The UK eel fishery is not considered to be a major contributive factor to the decline of the population of the species. There are many other factors impacting upon the fascinating life cycle of eels, notably barriers to migration, habitat loss and climate change. Recently, new UK legislation was passed which sets out a number of requirements to address the major issues, guided by our Eel Management Plans. We will continue to authorise and regulate eel net fisheries, providing that those fisheries are considered to be sustainable. Also, it should be pointed out that not all of the eels caught by nets are killed. For instance, a significant proportion of elvers (baby eels) caught in England and Wales are sold on for restocking elsewhere in Europe. In contrast to commercial licenses however, eel angling by rod and line was effectively unlimited because the Environment Agency cannot refuse to grant an angling licence. This meant that there was the potential for our ~1 million anglers to have a big impact on eels. The Environment Agency considered various means to introduce controls to limit this potential impact and decided that the most effective and efficient way was to introduce the requirement for Catch and Release, as this does not prevent anglers from fishing for eels but does reduce their potential impact to zero. These controls on fishing are subject to review and may change in the coming years as we develop a better understanding about our eel stocks and what things have a significant impact on the numbers of emigrating silver eels. All the relevant legislation can be seen online. The EU Regulation is at: eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2007:248:0017:0023:EN:PDFThe UK legislation is at: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2009/3344/contents/madeand UK Eel Management Plans are here: archive.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/fisheries/freshwater/eelmp.htmThere’s also a lot more information about eels and eel fisheries on our website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/sectors/125683.aspx Jerome.

I've just removed a post from this thread that was totally out of order. Please refrain from degrading the thread Darren I think that the staff at the E Agency will not be too upset by the fact that only one poster put anything on which needed moderating. We have over 3,500 members on here, many who have never seen anybody from the Agency but have seen and heard of waterways being fished for food by the people who have been allowed to settle in our country from the eastern block countries where fishing for food is common practice. It can be a little frustrating for the EA and anglers alike. I think our errant young poster has to understand that Environment Agency staff are very thin on the ground and cannot be expected to be everywhere. Perhaps an invitation for a respected forum member to spend a day with Agency staff and then report back to the forum what a typical day in the field and office is like for staff could be a good idea. Unfortunately, being a government funded agency, political correctness is likely to rear its ugly head and scotch that one.
