I think if I lived somewhere they were a bit more plentiful I might change my allegiance However that one fish probably took me about 20hrs fishing time and god knows how much scouting - probably cost me about £100 in fuel as well I think the bottom line is they can be caught in the Humber by design or accident but certainly not easily and in sufficient numbers to target regularly Somebody will now post they catch dozens every year just you watch As for bass I've had a really poor year locally so far but the awful weather has been mainly responsible. I know where I can catch them when conditions are right so I'll stick to them for now Catching them on the surface with poppers is still the biggest buzz for me at the moment even if I'm having to travel to Wales or further to do it

Gave up trying to get my Mullet up Nawth, and went to a place that actually has more Mullet than I have seen anywhere, namely the island of Jersey! Visited Jerseyman down in St Hellier, and he not only helped with sorting some gear, but also provided a guide in the form of Dennis the Mulletman to sort out the where, when, and show me how best to go about catching mullet. The first tide didnt go too well with loads of Mullet swiming round us, (we were wading out), but despite all the local tallent, we ended up blanking. In the end thanks to their help and directions I switched venue to a place I was more comfortable with, (plus a switch to more suitable line and much smaller hooks suggested by Spudgun), my first Mullet came after feeding a loaf and a half of bread slop into the rising tide. Prior to that I had had one of the most frustrating few hours I have ever come across, missing bite after bite. Some burried the float a couple of feet at least, others barely moved it at all. But at last I had had one that hung on long enough for me to actually hit the bite. Then the fun started, and now I know why so many love fishing for Mullet, boy do they s ! BOF

BOF I've actually seen them suck in the bait and yet no matter what I did they managed to avoid being hooked. I tried striking as soon as the bait moved, leaving it till they must surely have nearly swallowed it and everything in between - all to no avail. Having said that I once caught 12 in a 3 hour session in a Devon creek and barely missed a bite. They are the most contrary of fish but boy do they s when you do hook one Probably the closest thing to sightcasting for bonefish we have in the UK

Just a update Bof, the pipe and the beach to the right of where we were, produced 6 fish over 6lb to the commercial bloke who shot a net through there on Friday night, plus others over 4.
There was a shore comp started on sat, so you can guess he was popular. though the board at present as 5 fish over 4lb on it. Ref the gear ,for others who may dabble, now converted to braid for fishing off the beach , use floating stuff and it is soooooo much easier to mend the line ,avoid weed etc ,than mono.Iam now using a standard waggler rod, so it cushions everything, and a 4/5lb fluro hook link
Hiya Phil, now on my 7th plugging session and still no fish . Back to mullet next week

Hiya Phil, now on my 7th plugging session and still no fish . Back to mullet next week Hows it going Graham - I've had a pretty awful season basswise on the Yorkshire coast. It was a late start due to the cold spring and even when it warmed up conditions were invariably poor - too much colour, too much weed etc. Word seems to have got out as well and busloads of geordies have been coming down and hammering the usual marks - catch and release dont come into it I've had a few trips to Wales and a fish or two but mainly from boats. I'm off to New Zealand in November and interestingly they've tried to introduce catch limits for sport anglers - 3 fish for snapper for instance although how they'd police it I've no idea. Anyway its caused a right stink politically especially as no limits have been set for commercial fishermen I'm beginning to think an extension of the 'no-take' zone right round Flambro would be a good idea as long as we can still fish c&r - might give the bass stocks some breathing space Not bothered for any mullet locally this year tho I managed to poach a couple in Conwy marina in July - best was about 4lbs. There's some real belters in there - 6's and 7's easy

hmm, the local govermnent has raised the idea for to take zones, catch limits and other restriction on recreational users, and surprisingly enough ,no such thoughts for the commercials. The amount of "black" fish landed is increasing each year, in complete reversal of everywhere else and they both don't give a t*ss or worse don't seem to accept the extent to which it is even going on. They nicked one bloke last yeear for 50k of bream[ unlicenced ,rod caught] apparently took them 30 hrs of survillence, and then they didn't even confiscate his gear. Then to rub salt in, the so called merchant who bought it, was left out of both the legal side and not named in court.
Makes you weep.
still, life is going to go on, and having spent a long time getting stressed and worked up over things like that, trying to work within the system , i now just speak plainly ,and worry about anyone who feels targeted later.
still haven't had a follow let alone a fish, and lost the only mullet off again this afty.can only get better

Just back from a trip to Alcudia on Mallorca and we were inundated with them. Ok they were not large, in fact the best was just over a kilo but wow did they go! It was just as well they were mainly small fish, as my travel kit was chosen more for fitting in the bags, and not being too big a loss if that bag went adrift. Normally it was usually used for snatching small Roach or Perch, and was woefully under gunned with s pers like these. The kit eventually ended up in the bin in several bits after one of the bigger ones firstly stripped the gears on the reel, and then when the reel then jammed, broke the butt section on the rod. For anyone looking for a "normal" family holiday in the sun the Belleview Lagomonte is a pretty good hotel to look into, (the lagoon my Grandson and I fished being right outside the front gate). BOF

Ey up BOF Bit of a old thread but I,ve just joined the forum. Plenty of mullet on the northeast coast but very localised. They mainly feed on seaweed maggots(in my area) which float. I live in saltburn, two locations are prime for plenty of mullet(weed traps) but you need the right tides, time and weather.(july,aug,sep.) I,ve had a couple of go,s fly fishing maggot flies. Hooked and lost 4 seen plenty of fish including bass mixed with them. Maybe get 3-4 sessions a year right for catching if your lucky. It,s all off the shore. I,ll keep you posted if I crack it.:-)
