Went for a long walk around here yesterday. Every time I've been, people seem to be fishing on the south side of the ponds. Is there a reason for this? Burshill B had very few fishable pegs, but to be fair, there were some lads from Bishop Burton college three who were repairing some pegs(will this continue as there seems to be a lot still to do on this pond?)

When you say south side are you talking about brandesburton ponds 3 and 4. I've noticed most fish pond no.4 and the north side of no.3 if that's what you mean.

I do mean 3 & 4 ponds, and I mean people fish facing the road

That's simply where the majority of pegs are at that end! Why are the pegs mainly at that side? Well the path is/was very narrow on the road side, partly due to the steep bank, so I'm guessing the pegs were built where there was more room! I have an old photo somewhere of when the bank was a little less green and you can see how narrow the path once was, might post it up if I can find it.

All the lads I see carp fishing always fish no.4 and the far end of no.3 facing the road but there are loads of pegs on the south side of no.3 on the road side and field side but I've never seen anyone fish them. Don't suppose the carp come that far down but does anyone know if there are roach, bream or perch down that end?

I would not call three pegs loads, but either way, it makes little difference. It is more comfortable on the field bank due to the larger swims. My favourite swim on the whole lake is actually on the road side. Although those swims that you've seen busy are very productive. You will find all the various species everywhere at one time or another. The few last pegs at the southern end of pond 3 are excellent all year round. The very first one you come to on the field side offers anglers some quality features to utilise. You have an extensive reed line to fish towards, there are at least two varieties of reed. For most of the year there are a couple of weed beds and then there are the pads. You have a wide scope of depths from 6ft next to the reeds and 20ft towards the middle. There are many areas of silt and gravel and even a large lump of flat concrete – that can be very deceiving leading you to think your fishing on very firm gravel!

Burshill B had very few fishable pegs, but to be fair, there were some lads from Bishop Burton college three who were repairing some pegs(will this continue as there seems to be a lot still to do on this pond?) Hiya The Association has agreed that Bishop Burton can use Burshill B as a development project for their students taking the fishery management course. The work is agreed beforehand and the cost of materials are met from Association funds. There is mutual benefit in this arrangement and it will continue. As soon as we get a lull in the current round of work parties, we will be having a day on Burshill A attempting to get to grips with the weed. We have had two large rakes manufactured which we'll use to initially remove as much weed as possible, before a treatment with chemicals to stem any new growth. I'll let you know how we get on, whether we succeed or fail only time will tell, but we'll have a go! Burshill A is too nice a pond to leave as it is. I'm sure that if we can reduce the weed and perhaps increase the stocks a little, it will become of the Association's most popular venues. rgds Derek

Went fishing at Brandesburton pond no.4 today and was amazed at the how much its changed since I was last there. paths renovated, pegs spruced up and trees cut back. Well done to all those who put the hard work in. I haven't been up to Burshil B yet to see how things are coming along but will be soon. Didn't catch anything at pond no.4 but had my piking gear so popped next door to Burshill A and caught a Jack Pike. Quite please really as its the first fish I've caught in there. Would have fished there longer but had no bait left.

OMG!! Was that you I could see at the far end? Twas I matey. ;D I'd been fishing in pond no.4 but not a twitch. I'd brought a few mackeral with me so I popped next door into Burshill A. My rod had been out only 10/15 mijutes when my buzzer screamed into life! Turned out to be a Jack but it put up a nice little scrap as I got it close in. I was going to fish longer but I'd run out of pike bait so went back next door to pond no.4 and caught nothing. ;D Did you catch anything?

Going to keep at it at Brandesburton for a while Brian as I'm determined to beat my PB pike in any of the ponds there before the Pike fishing tails off. Might pop back to Ray Fosters in between but let me know how you get on at Brough as I haven't tried them ponds yet

nightwatchman in brans on 3 and 4 the double peg is good for pike if you fish to the trees on the left hand side also in the double peg the one looking to the road there is a small clump of reeds just in front of that there are some lillys tight to the lake bed fish to those there has been some nice pike there for me. in pond 4 fish to the reeds on the right or the trees close in on the left hope this helps

Thanks for the tip Andy. Does anyone know when the Pike fishing will tale off as I've got quite a few venues to cover yet? ;D I'm presuming when the weather gets milder and the big girls start to spawn

It varies Gord, depending on the weather and the water your fishing. but as a rule of thumb pike will start to spond towards the back end of March and through April/May, although pike have been known to spawn twice in the same year say August/September however this is rare.

has anyone got any info on the farm ponds in this area? i have fished them before but it was about 8-10 years ago catching live bait for my mate piking so i know that there are pike and some roach/perch in if they are still there? as said i aint been for about 8 years and just used to pole fish for the silvers is it still worth a try?
