Not always foreign, there was a guy and his son fishing my local River at the weekend, i politley told them it was out of season, all he said was ''well there isnt any signs saying so''. I didnt bother asking if he had a license Also if go on the certain parts of the Swale and on other yorkshire spate Rivers you will find plenty of British fishing out of season, they do it every year Jon

tbh its time they clamped down on who ever is fishing with out a licence foreign or not , i pay my £27 each time to fish and i excpect some thing done about it . if i did not have a car licence the coppers would hammer me and same for a tv licence if i did not pay it , so things have to change they keep saying we have to have a no fishing between 31st march till 16th june but still other flout the law . i can honstley say in all the 30 odd years ive been fishing not 1 baliff has checked my licence may be cause ive been lucky but knowing my luck if i did not have 1 then i would be in court with a big fine . i just think the ea can do better for the amount of money that gets paid from the licence

Yup theres probably more english people who fish during closed season then foreighners, simply becuase we out number them by so much. Well thats what i think may be wrong. but still atleast most fish which are caught by english people are put back, unlike our european neighbours which the only place there put is on a plate.
The EA do take notice but they cannot be in every place that something illegal happens although i wish they could. If they happen to catch people in the act they usually get a nice fine.

Hate to dissapoint but the EA said they would do a 2hr session on YF as orignal post which is now waaaaaaayyyyyy past done.. The team will be online live on Thursday 10th March between 12 and 2pm, and can respond from this account to questions asked on this thread. Thanks. Alex They have agreed to do another but havent fixed a date or time yet and i suggest will be a fair few months off so if you want any questions answered before then best get in touch with them direct. No point ordering a pint after last orders or choking on your KP..... The section was left for all to read but to avoid confision perhaps needs locking off until the next time eh and any questions asked since the last one will be copied over to a new session

Q. Does the ea take any notice of our foreign friends fishing our rivers out of season as it seem some are getting away with it? – Compo
A. Compo, we take all reports of illegal fishing very seriously however we simply don’t have the resources to attend every one at the time of the report. As you’ll remember from the last web chat we told you we are a very small team covering a very large area and this does mean that frustrating as it is for all of us, some people will ‘get away with it.’
It’s also very difficult to prove that an offence has been committed at this time of year. The only time when absolutely no one should be fishing on the rivers is between 15 March and 2 April. After 2 April our Yorkshire byelaws state.
‘On waters where the close season for freshwater fish applies the only lures or baits which may be used during the close season are natural or artificial fly, minnow, worm, shrimp, prawn, sand eel or artificial lures. It is an offence to fish for salmon by means other than an artificial fly or artificial lure before 16 June.’
Obviously we can, and will still take action against anyone fishing without a licence, fishing with maggots or trying to catch coarse fish, but it’s often very difficult for us to work out from reports we get which ones we should pursue as often many of the reports we get are for people fishing legitimately for trout with the above baits.
What we do is to look at the reports and work out if there are any patterns emerging, for example are we getting a lot of reports in one location or the same car seen in the same place. When we see a pattern we are able to target our resources into that area.
What is key though is that you report the events you see to us. Without your reports we simply don’t know where to target our enforcement resource so please report what you see via our 24 hour Incident Hotline on 0800 807060. I was surprised over the Easter weekend that we only received 2 reports of illegal angling and given the fantastic weather I can only assume that people just weren’t picking up the phone.
As we said in our last chat if you are a direct witness to an incident (we cannot pursue second hand intelligence), firstly do not try and intervene or put yourself in a position where you could come to harm. What you need to do is gather as much information as possible. The type of information we need is:
Your name, address and contact numbers – We can’t follow up anonymous reports Time and date What exactly was happening Who was there Do you know them What did they look like Were they in a vehicle What was the registration number
Using this information we can then take a statement from you and this will form the basis of our investigation.
If you are a member of a club which is experiencing problems with illegal fishing then we can also set up joint patrols with your bailiffs. You can contact us on 08708 506506. Ask for the Phoenix House Fisheries Team in Leeds and we will make arrangements to visit.
