Has anyone heard of any pollution at Yeadon Tarn? I have seen plenty of dead fish in there this last couple of weeks, carp to 7lb dead and on the bank, some good sized perch and several bream. I was talking to a guy on Sunday and he reckoned that some fish had been taken away and that antifreeze from the airport was suspected. Again this morning I saw 3 bream a small carp and a common carp about 8lb which seemed to be in difficulties close to the edge where the boats launch.

Rang EA, said they were aware and were investigating. There is a notice from Leeds Council confirming this. Last evening me and the wife were watching a fair sized carp swimming around at the far side very close to the surface looking distressed, this morning there was a dead carp about 7-8 lb upside down. Also yesterday there were hundreds of carp of various sizes swimming around near the concrete bit. As to the fishing I was talking to a lady this morning about the problems and she said that her dog jumped in to chase after some bread she was chucking to the ducks. Her dog had diahorrea and was sickly for 3 days, so I wouldn't go fishing until the place has a had a good flush through

Apparently I can catch Bream in an empty bucket, all I need do is fish for anything else.

You will be fishing Larkfield then I suppose, DaveMac. Are those lovely Rudd still in there?

Sorry mate, never been to Larkfield. I think I may go to Toms Pond tomorrow. Already got provisional permission from the present Mrs Davemac.

I walked round today. I saw one dead bream around 2-3 pounds, and at the bottom of the lake nearest the runway. There must have been 20 plus carp all near the surface. Not looking good and not good to see really.I hope the environment agency can sort this out.

It has happened many times before over the last 25 years, having fished the tarn since I was 11 (Aireborough junior team at the time) and I`m now 37! Not fished it for a while though if I`m honest. Larkfield is now a Bingley A C water, and is fishing well for Tench using micros on the method with banded 6mm pellet on the hook.
20 years ago I had Perch over 4lb, Rudd around 2lb plus some good Bream and Pike...it was a free water in them days!

Fish deaths at Yeadon Tarn are being investigated by the Environment Agency.
Yeadon Tarn, where a number of fish have died. Fish have been dying in the tarn over the last few weeks and Leeds City Council’s environmental health team have reported the problem to the Environment Agency which has now launched an investigation.
The investigation includes water sampling and removing some fish from the tarn for examination.
It is believed that the sudden increase in temperature following extremely cold conditions may mean there is insufficient oxygen in the water, and that this has led to the deaths.
But the investigation is still on-going and users of the tarn have been informed – although it is being stressed there is no danger to the public.
Coun Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said: “Our environmental health team is working with the Environment Agency who are investigating the problem. I’m concerned about the fish deaths and hope the cause can be found soon.
“Once the cause has been found we will look to resolve the problem and replenish the stock of fish lost.”
He said Tarn users were being made aware of the problem but as the fish were not meant to be eaten anyway there were no health risks to the public.

does anyone else think it could be what he said about it been the change in temperature and low oxygen?? i dont otherwise it would have happened before and other fisheries would have suffered

There could be so many factors that could have caused the fish deaths. It has to be said we have had a extreme winter and that has caused problems.Low temperatures/oxygen levels, more than normal use of chemicals to clear snow and ice. All these would have contributed to a prity poor aquatic environment. And like i said in a earlier post I have never seen carp on the surface in such large numbers at this time of year. The main thing is getting it sorted quick ,so all the wild life can get back to normal.

Was speaking to a lad on Saturday morning and he said that they had been banned from fishing by Leeds council until it has been fully investigated. He said that there has been some talk of a bacterial infection. They are now looking at a burst sewer somewhere nearby.

As far as i am aware, all test from EA have came back negative, and apparently quite a few waters across the country have had the same problem. So the problem seems to have been, extreme temperature fluctuations/insufficient oxygen . EA placed a few carp, that where a bit lethargic, into containers of lake water and blasted it with oxygen, upon arrival at EA HQ the carp where going ballistic.so hopefully things will get better from now..
