ey up all just wandering if anyone is trying/stopped recently? i decided last week i had had enough so monday i went to docs and got some patches. now i think im doing quite well considering i used to smoke upto 30 cigs a day but on monday i finished my last pack of cigs off then put a patch on then tuesday i was out all day and bought ten and smoked them throughout the day yesterday i had about 2 maybe 3 cigs and today i have had about 7 or 8 drags on a cig but have been really stressed. I really want to do this and just cant seem to overcome the urge sometimes so if anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated thanks lee

Hey Lee,
I actually stopped smoking 2 months ago now... Thankfully, I didn't need any help with patches or doctors.. nothing. I just thought " oh - I'll quit today " (I've smoked for years.. 20+ a day).
I can't really recommend anything other then - Always keep half o' pack lying around. (You always want the things you don't have. (but since there's a pack there... that didn't really kick in).
I have put on a few lbs since I stopped though!
I did actually enjoy smoking.... thats why I smoked - not because I "needed / had" too. Maybe thats why it was easy for me to stop?
I do however, buy a pack if I'm going fishing (these normally last the next session too). I find it really enjoyable sat there with a cig, relaxing in the countryside

see thats the thing i wasnt enjoying it was rushing my cigs all time cant even remember ever enjoying it to be honest. i started when i was 8 just to "fit in" and dont think ive ever gone a day without one so 16 years and i have always been a heavy smoker. a bloke who i worked with did the same as you but that would just be my breakdown coz i would just smoke them and go buy more it was more a habit for me than enjoyment but probably addiction too. everytime i got off bus or was waiting for bus i had a cig, when i left house to put a bag in bin id have a cig basically everywhere out of house i had a cig, dont smoke in house coz of my daughter and i like my house to be nice not smelly and nicotine stained lol but thats not the reason im stopping nor is it because i cant afford it its just pure boredom of smoking and not enjoying it and also not been able to do much thats energetic coz i get out of breath so quick lol maybe thats my age hahaha,
maybe ill just try what you did but without the cigs in the house
cheers buddy and congrats to you for doing it

Everyones different though! What works for one.. doesnt for another.
Cut down to "smooths... or lights" Try Menthols instead (my dad did this... then eventually quit) Try 'Backa' - you'll get fed up of rolling them... lol.
Have a packet of sweets around... when you feel the urge - just have a handful of sweets.. or a cheese straw / stick or something

Everyone has diff reasons as to why they started smoking initially, and as Liver-Red said already everyone is diff. However, quitting just like that when you have been a heavy smoker is not always ideal. I smoked packs for years then turned to rolling to reduce expense , which it has done, but also has reduced the amount I smoke too simply cos you have to roll em yourself so proved beneficial but i smoke because I suffer severely from stress and smoking keeps it at bay. Using these replacement pherapies ie patch, gum ect tbh dont help at all because they are nicotine and nicotine is the addictive drug in cigarettes. The only benefit you do get from them is that your not intaking the other god knows how many harmfull chemicals contained in a cigarette so really you still need will power to quit and not these substitutes. Anyway I hope your efforts will be successfull luckatme but it takes a lot of determination, will power, time and patience to succeed.

I stopped years ago now, just made a deal with the now ex to stop and did it. Told myself it was doing me no good at all, didn't need to do it and would feel loads better afterwards, TBH it was alot easier than I thought and have not touched one since.
My trainee at work has decided this week he's stopping. I bet him money that he couldn't just stop, no patches, gum, fake cigs, etc but he's doing really well...... we'll see how long it lasts this time!
Good luck anyway, stick with it and you'll feel loads better in a few short weeks, trust me!

I smoked for over 25 years, but gave it up with the help of patches and mind power. I know its hard but the way I did it was to totally change my routine. When I was a smoker my routine was as follows - out of bed then kettle on. Hot sugared coffee with a cig outside....... So when I quit, the hot drink bit was stopped replaced with fresh orange and that helped. Same at work, instead of standing in the outdoor smoking area I would go straight inside and read something. Little things like that really helped, just breaking up that smoking habit routine. Half the time you dont really want a smoke, it really is just habit..... After meals was hard as thats when I always wanted one, so instead I'd have a mint and do the washing up ! Yeah that serious, but as I say - anything to break up your smoking routine. Now several years later I can't remember the last time I thought about smoking.

yeah thats what im doing this will be my first day today of not having a cig at all with no patch or anything and to be honest its easier without the patch than with it am on my second pack of mints today already but mints are better than cigs and thats just what i keep telling myself and everytime i think of a cig i just find something else to do. i dont have any will power but am doing this for me and maybe a little bit for daughter coz i wanna be able to do things with her and i believe that kids whos parents smoke will smoke and i dont want her smoking when shes older
thanks for all tips n stuff lads and its also good to know that people are/have stopped and they know the feeling of just wanting to have a cig but dont

After being a smoker for 30 years i chucked it in 2000 and have not had one since.
Totally agree with what bostonman says about breaking up any routine with which you associate smoking, i used to have a couple of cigs on the way to work, always at the same place so i went to work a different way, same at dinner times etc. Change the routine and it is easier.
Get a pen for your hands to fiddle with, its strange how your fingers miss holding a cig and try them chuppa pops lollipops when you fancy a cig.

i smoked for years, then a mate of gave me a book, title alan carr's how to stop smoking (not the goofy bloke who thinks he is funny) read it, then stopped, apparantly has over 90% success rate, if not you can get you money back, he also runs clinics in leeds and sheffield.
seriously i would give it a go, well worth a couple of quid.

Our lass smoked for nearly 20 years - read Alan Carr's book and hasn't touched a fag in the last 3 years since putting the book down after finishing reading it.
No patches, no gum, no fake substitutes - just read the book.

Not sure about your idea that kids will smoke because parents do. Both my parents smoked 40 a day and I have never touched a cig. Watching them cough and the. Smell put me off for life.

Thought you may like to hear my story. Both my wife and I were smokers,I suppose 20/25 per day. On the day of the miner's strike 1984,I was taken int hospital with a suspected heart attack.I August of that year I underwent open heart surgery at Killingbeck hospital for a blocked conorary artery.Doctors said it was partly due to family history and the fact that out of seven children I was the only smoker.I have not touched a cig since that time.Prior to this both my wife and myself had tried to stop or cut down, but without much sucess.I even took up the pipe for a while. So to all you guys who are trying to stop I say stick with it,it is woth it in the end.I wish you all the best in your endevours.
